Electrolytic brightening gives stainless steels a bright shiny appearance. It is used in numerous fields of application, especially in the marine industry and outdoor furniture. This is a process that is done electrochemically (by passing electric current) by hooking the parts to be polished to special frames. This treatment, which selectively removes the micro surface roughness present on the part, goes to modify the mechanical measurements (the removal of material can cause a decrease in the original dimensions): where it is necessary to maintain tolerances from a hundredth of a millimeter down, this consequence must be foreseen already at the design stage.
